The San Francisco 49ers are hiring Anthony Lynn as their new assistant head coach, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Lynn, most known for his four-season stint as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers from 2017-20, spent the 2021 campaign coordinating the Detroit Lions' offense.

Detroit decided to part ways with the offensive coordinator after scoring only 19.1 points per game last year. Lynn called plays for the Lions over the first half of the season but lost the role to head coach Dan Campbell in the second half.

Lynn, who reportedly had other offers from NFL and college football teams this year, is expected to be an important cog in the 49ers' running game, according to Schefter.

The 53-year-old served as running backs coach for five different teams throughout his coaching career, most recently during a two-season stint with the Buffalo Bills (2015-16). He was also the interim head coach and offensive coordinator during one of his years with the Bills.

Lynn played running back for the 49ers from 1995-96.
