No injuries reported in ammonia leak at rural Ancaster bakery
A rural Ancaster bakery was evacuated early Monday morning due to an ammonia leak.
In an email to The Spectator, Ryan Coburn, assistant deputy chief of the Hamilton Fire Department, said just before 4:20 a.m., emergency services responded to a hazardous materials call at Aspire Bakeries at 1770 Fiddler's Green Rd.
Coburn said an ammonia leak had been discovered in the compressor room, warranting a total evacuation of the facility.
Approximately 50 employees were working at the time. A handful of HSR buses were called in to be used as a temporary shelter.
Coburn said the hazardous materials team entered the plant and contained the leak. Crews then ventilated the building and checked the air quality of the facility.
When fire crews determined that air quality levels were acceptable, the building was turned back over to the owner," he added.
There were no injuries, according to the fire department. Sections of both Carluke Road and Fiddler's Green Road were closed during the call, but have since reopened.
