Former Houston Texans safety Justin Reid intends to sign a three-year, $31.5-million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs that includes $20 million guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Reid presumably joins Kansas City's secondary to replace veteran Tyrann Mathieu, who's a free agent after spending the last three years at Arrowhead.

The Chiefs didn't offer Mathieu a deal since his contract expired at the conclusion of the 2021 season, according to Kimberley A. Martin of ESPN.

Mathieu, 29, was one of the NFL's top defensive backs during his stint in Kansas City, earning two first-team All-Pro berths and two Pro Bowl nods from 2019-21. He was also a key starter for the Chiefs during their Super Bowl LIV title run.

The 25-year-old Reid spent the first four seasons of his career in Houston after being drafted in the third round in 2018. The Stanford product put on a show as a rookie but hasn't been able to replicate that success. His 88 tackles, 10 pass breakups, and three interceptions from his rookie campaign remain career highs.

He racked up 66 tackles and two interceptions through 13 appearances last year while allowing an 82.9 passer rating when targeted.

The Chiefs also restructured Frank Clark's contract Monday, keeping the defensive end aboard on a new two-year, $29-million contract that can be worth up to $36 million with incentives, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Clark has amassed 18.5 sacks since joining Kansas City in 2019.
