UPDATE: Occupant found deceased after vehicle reportedly found in Lake Ontario in Mississauga
Peel Regional Police located a man who was pronounced deceased several hours after a car was found in Lake Ontario in Mississauga Thursday morning, March 24.
The incident was reported shortly after 3 a.m. near Lakeshore Road East and Lakefront Promenade. Const. Akhil Mooken said the car entered the water from a boat ramp and made it about 20 feet away from the shoreline.
Investigators believe there were two occupants in the car at the time, one of whom managed to escape and was assessed at a hospital.
Later Thursday morning, police said the other occupant was unaccounted for. Mooken said poor visibility in the water made it difficult to locate the vehicle.
"Even now during daylight hours, we're not able to see the car from the surface," Mooken said.
"Our diver entered the water and (only had) six inches of visibility, so was feeling around trying to locate the vehicle."
Around 10:30 a.m., police said the car was found submerged in 8-10 feet of water. A tow truck was on scene to assist in pulling the vehicle from the water.
Two hours later, police said the car was towed out and the occupant, a 25-year-old man, was found inside deceased.
The investigation into the incident continues. Anyone with information can contact Peel's 12 Division criminal investigation bureau at 905-453-2121, ext. 1233.
