Hamilton police say they have arrested 33-year-old a driver in connection with a fatal collision in the Durand neighbourhood Tuesday morning.

Police said on Twitter they arrested a man after a pedestrian was struck by a car in the area of Park and Herkimer streets, near Durand Park.

Speaking to The Spectator, Supt. Dave Thompson of the Hamilton Paramedic Service said emergency services transported a man to hospital in critical condition.

Police later announced through a media release that the 78-year-old pedestrian had died of his injuries.

Police said the same vehicle involved in the Durand collision is also believed to have been involved in a separate crash on the Hamilton Mountain.

Garth Street is closed in both directions between Bendamere Avenue and Sanatorium Road. Police have also warned residents to expect traffic delays in that area, as well as in the Durand neighbourhood.

The public is asked to avoid both.

The Spectator has reached out to police for more information.

Pedestrian-involved crashes this year

Tuesday's crash is just the latest in a string of pedestrian-involved collisions on Hamilton streets this year. The following crashes have killed six people - both drivers and pedestrians.

March 30A teenage girl was struck by a car on her way home from school at the intersection of Main and Dundurn streets. Police said she was crossing east on Main when a white Hyundai SUV turned left onto Dundurn and struck her. She was transported to hospital in critical condition.

March 19Four people, including three pedestrians and a 27-year-old driver, were killed in a fiery crash just west of the intersection of King and Main streets. Police said the male driver of a stolen 2004 Toyota Prius was speeding westbound on Main Street East before he jumped the curb and smashed into a hydro pole on King Street East outside a Pizza Pizza.

Feb. 12A woman was struck by a car while crossing King Street West near Ogilvie Street in downtown Dundas. She suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Feb. 5A 70-year-old man was seriously injured after he was hit by a car while crossing Upper James Street, just south of Wembley Road. He died of his injuries two weeks later. No charges have been laid.

Jan. 30Robert Stevenson and his dog were struck and killed by an eastbound truck while crossing Lawrence Road near Cochrane Road. Hamilton resident Andrew Muir has been charged in connection with the collision.

More to come.
