Andersen leaves late vs. Avalanche with injury

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen had to be helped off the ice late in a loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.

Andersen slipped and fell after appearing to catch an edge with under five minutes remaining in the game.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour didn't have a postgame update on either Andersen or captain Jordan Staal, according to team reporter Walt Ruff. Staal was also hurt late in Saturday's contest.

Frederik Andersen will get an MRI done. The Hurricanes should have a better idea of his lower body injury in the coming days. Carolina obviously hoping it's not too serious at this point but the MRI will give a clearer picture.

Andersen is in the running for the Vezina Trophy this season. The 32-year-old is having a stellar bounce-back campaign with a .922 save percentage over 52 games.

Carolina is now tied with the New York Rangers for the Metropolitan Division lead by both points percentage and total points. The Hurricanes clinched a playoff spot on April 8.

Andersen is in his first season with Carolina, which signed him to a two-year contract as a free agent last July.

The Danish netminder was significantly limited by a knee injury while he was with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2021. He played only 24 contests that season before leaving the Atlantic Division squad after five campaigns.
