San Francisco 49ers star left tackle Trent Williams knows that Aaron Donald's new contract with the Los Angeles Rams means more trouble for the rest of the NFC West.

"I wish he would have retired," Williams told reporters Tuesday when asked about Donald's new deal.

Donald, who considered retiring after winning Super Bowl LVI in February, restructured his contract with the Rams on Monday, becoming the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. The All-Pro defensive lineman will reportedly make $95 million over the next three seasons.

"I mean, he deserves the contract," Williams added. "Obviously, we all know what he can do. I don't know him on a personal level. I like competing against him, brings out the best in all of us."

The Rams and 49ers play each other at least twice a year. The two divisional rivals faced off three times last season, with San Francisco winning both regular-season meetings before Los Angeles clinched a close victory in the NFC title game. Donald, who didn't register a sack in those three matchups against the 49ers, sealed the Rams' playoff victory by pressuring quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo into an interception in the contest's final seconds.

Donald, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, has racked up 12.5 sacks in 15 regular-season appearances against San Francisco.

The Rams will visit the 49ers in Week 4 this season. San Francisco then travels to Los Angeles in Week 8.
