A Hamilton man is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on York Boulevard early Saturday night - marking the city's 13th road fatality of the year.

In a news release Sunday afternoon, Hamilton police said just after 7:30 p.m., a 61-year-old Hamilton man was driving a 2003 Nissan sedan southbound on York Boulevard just past the McQuesten High Level Bridge.

Police said the man then entered the northbound lanes, driving into the path of an oncoming 2008 Jeep Liberty. The front driver side of the Nissan then clipped the rear driver's side of the Jeep, which was being driven by a 30-year-old Hamilton man.

As a result of the collision, the Jeep sustained significant damage and came to a stop along the eastern side of the curb.

After making contact with the Jeep, police said the Nissan spun out counterclockwise directly into the path of an oncoming 2022 Mercedes-Benz, which was being driven by a 27-year-old man from the United States.

The two vehicles collided, with the front passenger door of the Nissan being struck by the Mercedes-Benz, according to police. Both cars eventually came to a stop along the eastern side of the curb.

The driver of the Nissan was removed from his car by emergency crews and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. His identity has not been released by police.

Several people from the two other involved vehicles were assessed by paramedics, and two female passengers from the Mercedes-Benz were taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

Hamilton Paramedic Services superintendent Dave Thompson told The Spectator that patients assessed at the scene included a two-month-old boy and four women.

The Hamilton Police collision reconstruction unit has taken over the investigation. As of Sunday evening, impairment and speed had not been ruled out as factors in the crash.

An earlier police media release indicated that seven vehicles were involved in the collision, but Thompson said it doesn't sound like they all made contact. A few had to swerve to avoid (the crash)."

Police closed York Boulevard for approximately six hours as they investigated the crash.
