Updated: One man critically injured in fire on Kenilworth North
Multiple people were rescued and one man was taken to hospital in critical condition Friday night after a fire at a mixed-used building in east Hamilton.
Several fire crews responded to the multistorey building at 94 Kenilworth Ave. N., between Dunsmure Road and Roxborough Avenue, around 7 p.m. for reports of a structure fire.
A spokesperson for the fire department said crews were met with visible flames and dark black smoke upon arrival to the property, which consists of apartments atop a commercial store.
Ground ladders were used to perform multiple rescues, they said, and the blaze was quickly brought under control.
Dave Thompson of the Hamilton Paramedic Service said three people were assessed on site for possible injuries.
Two people - a woman in her 50s and a teenage boy - were treated at the scene but refused transport to hospital, he said. A man in his 50s sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been notified of the blaze. A cause has yet to be determined.
