A 31-year-old Hamilton man is in critical condition following a hit-and-run crash at a Mountain intersection Friday evening.

Police say the man was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Upper James Street and Inverness Avenue when his vehicle was struck from behind. He was initially taken to hospital in life-threatening condition, police said in an earlier release. His condition was later updated to critical.

The second driver fled, but was later apprehended, police said in a Saturday afternoon media release.

First responders were called to the scene of the collision at about 11:30 p.m.

Following the collision, police closed Upper James Street near the Claremont Access for about six hours for the investigation.

The collision reconstruction unit has now taken over the investigation, police say, due to the nature of the injuries."

Speed and impairment have not been ruled out, they added.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the unit at 905-546-4753 or 905-546-4755 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at crimestoppershamilton.com.
