Raiders hire Morgan as NFL's 1st Black female president
The Las Vegas Raiders hired Sandra Douglass Morgan as their new president, the team announced Thursday.
Morgan will become the first Black woman named as team president in NFL history. Prior to joining the Raiders, Morgan served as chairwoman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board. She was also named vice-chair of the Las Vegas Super Bowl hosting committee.
"I am thrilled that Sandra has agreed to join the Raiders family," owner Mark Davis said. "Her experience, integrity, and passion for this community will be invaluable to our organization."
"The Raiders have a long legacy of greatness, because of each of you and because of visionaries like Mark's father, Al," Morgan wrote in a letter to employees obtained by Mick Akers of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "Let's carry that spirit forward together into this new season for Raider Nation and the Las Vegas community."
Morgan's hire arrives a few months after the club fired Dan Ventrelle, who took over as interim president after Marc Badain resigned last summer. Ventrelle then alleged owner Mark Davis fired him in retaliation for bringing up concerns regarding a hostile work environment within the franchise.
The NFL released a statement shortly after, promising to investigate the matter.
Ventrelle's dismissal was one of several departures at the executive level over a 10-month span. Chief operations and analytics officer Jeremy Aguero also resigned earlier this year after seven months on the job.
"Let me be clear - I am not here to avoid or sidestep problems or concerns that need to be addressed," Morgan said. "I've given long and thoughtful consideration to joining you, and I've done so because I believe in the promise of the Raiders. Most importantly, I believe in your core values of integrity, community, and commitment to excellence."
The Raiders have attempted to replenish their front office in recent months. Former fullback Marcel Reece was promoted to senior VP and chief of staff in May.
