Ontario Provincial Police lay charges after traffic stop in Caledonia

A driver is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop in Caledonia.

On Aug. 28, just before 12:35 p.m., a member of the Haldimand detachment of the OPP allegedly observed a Highway Traffic Act violation on Argyle Street South in Caledonia, and so they conducted a traffic stop.

As a result, the driver, a 58-year-old from Ohsweken, is now facing several charges. Under the Criminal Code, they are facing two counts of operating a motor vehicle while prohibited. Under the Highway Traffic Act, they are charged with driving while under suspension, driver failing to properly wear a seatbelt, failure to have an insurance card and driving with cannabis readily available.

The driver's licence was seized and the vehicle was impounded for 45 days.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cayuga at a later date to answer to the charges, which have not been proven in court.

Motorists are reminded to call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so if they see a suspected impaired driver on the roads.
