SIU investigating John Street South crash

Hamilton police are investigating a two-vehicle collision that closed John Street South in the Corktown neighbourhood, three blocks north of St. Joseph's hospital.

In a tweet Monday morning, police said the Ontario Special Investigations Unit is involved. The SIU investigates incidents involving police in Ontario where someone is seriously hurt or killed.

Emergency crews were called to a collision in the area of John Street South at Young Street at 10:53 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25.

A photograph from the scene shows police tape blocking the street between Young and Augusta Street as well as fire crews and a forensic van on scene. It also shows a badly damaged dark-coloured sedan surrounded by broken glass.

Const. Indy Bharaj told The Spectator that officers had an interaction with a vehicle," just before 11 p.m. Sunday night. Shortly after, a serious motor vehicle collision occurred.

Bharaj declined to provide any further information on the interaction, including where it happened in the city or the nature of the interaction.

Hamilton Paramedic Service Supt. Dave Thompson told The Spectator a man believed to be in his 30s was pronounced dead at the scene, while another man, believed to be in 40s, was transported to hospital without vital signs.

Two other men, believed to be in their 20s or 30s, were transported to hospital in serious condition.

John street was opened by police between Young and Augusta just before 9 a.m. Monday.
