The NFL officially has a roughing-the-passer problem.

Chris Jones made an excellent strip-sack of Derek Carr late in the second quarter of Monday night's matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders, even recovering the ball as he brought the quarterback down.

But for the second time in as many days, much like the controversial play that helped Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers escape with a win Sunday, the key sack was overturned by a shocking call.

The flag allowed the Raiders to add to their lead with a Daniel Carlson field goal. Kansas City quickly drove down and added a long field goal of its own to bring the score to 20-10 entering halftime, but the home fans were outraged, and NFL Twitter was ablaze.

It's not as bad as the Falcons call from yesterday, but I'm not sure what the NFL is realistically asking defensive players to do in that situation.

The rules already make it hard to play defense. Sometimes, the officials go ahead and make it impossible.

I'm sitting at a bar drinking Tito's with chief fans yelling at me. I DO NOT BLAME THEM!

Awful call @Chiefs @Raiders game. @NFLOfficiating needs lots of work on roughing the passer!!

- Sean Payton (@SeanPayton) October 11, 2022

"Nothing the passer" strikes again

This is ruining the sport.

Chris Jones just became the first player in NFL history called for roughing the passer while holding the ball.

- Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) October 11, 2022

The NFL has announced a new rule that when a defensive player tackles the QB it is automatically roughing the passer.

This is not football anymore. I know we have to protect the QB but Chris Jones was recovering a fumble. We have gotten ridiculous with this.

Imagine when they decide a playoff game with one of these Roughing calls. Cannot brace the fall when one hand is holding the football! Bad

You know what's a big problem? Jerome Boger talking about Grady Jarrett yesterday with zero willingness to fall on the sword and admit he made a mistake. And he only has to talk to one reporter.

How come refs are subject to so much less accountability than players or coaches?

- Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) October 11, 2022

Refs you Suck is the chant right now. #Chiefs #chiefkingdom pic.twitter.com/wZ1GwW46X2
