Rodgers: Teammates 'who are making too many mistakes shouldn't be playing'
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is calling out his teammates following a 3-4 start to the season.
"We had so many mental errors and mistakes," Rodgers said Tuesday on "The Pat McAfee Show" regarding the Packers' defeat to the Washington Commanders last weekend. "It's not the kind of football that we're used to playing over the years."
"Guys who are making too many mistakes shouldn't be playing," Rodgers added. "Got to start cutting some reps."
The four-time MVP noted the team is making double-digit errors this season compared to past years when it averaged at most seven mental lapses per game.
Green Bay dropped below .500 after losing to Washington in Week 7. The Packers incurred nine penalties for a total of 69 yards. While Rodgers complimented the Commanders' defensive personnel, he doesn't believe they did anything schematically that should have caused the Packers to struggle.
The 10-time Pro Bowler explained that players need to "take ownership of what we're putting on the field," which includes better game-planning and habits throughout the week.
"I think when the players really take over then you're going to see the possibility of us making a run," he said.
Rodgers insists he's optimistic about playing with a young receiving corps after Davante Adams' departure and Randall Cobb's injury. He believes better results will come once the youngsters gain some confidence.
Rodgers hasn't neared his MVP form so far this season. He's completed 66.8% of his pass attempts for 1,597 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions.
