Hamilton police charge Niagara sergeant who shot fellow cop with perjury
A Niagara Regional Police sergeant who shot a fellow officer almost four years ago has been arrested and charged with perjury by Hamilton Police Services.
In a media release, the NRP said it requested the assistance of Hamilton police to conduct an independent and impartial investigation" stemming from the on-duty altercation between two of its officers in 2018.
Police said the investigation was concluded Tuesday.
Charged with one count of perjury is Det.-Sgt. Shane Donovan.
On Nov. 29, 2018, a roadside argument over a bathroom break resulted in the cop-on-cop shooting in Pelham, with Donovan shooting Const. Nathan Parker 10 times.
Donovan was charged with attempted murder, which was reduced to aggravated assault and ultimately dropped in November 2019 when Crown attorney Ian Bulmer told the judge there was no reasonable prospect of conviction."
Parker was charged with assault and resisting arrest, but the charges were stayed by the Crown in December 2021.
However, during Parker's trial, Donovan was called as a Crown witness, and concerns were raised that Donovan was not truthful in his testimony.
Niagara police said it then requested assistance from Hamilton to conduct an investigation into the allegation of perjury.
On Tuesday, Donovan was arrested and charged by Hamilton police. Donovan was released on an officer-in-charge undertaking, with a court date for Dec. 12 in Hamilton.
