An Oakville woman says she's terrified to walk in her own neighbourhood after witnessing two large dogs attack one of her neighbours.

On Sunday, Nov. 13 at around 5 p.m., Jennifer Greco was unloading groceries from her truck when she heard screams coming from nearby Hopedale Park.

This lady was on the ground being attacked by two dogs," said Greco.

They'd ripped off her shoes and her socks and they were right on top of her."

Greco said she ran into the park, up to the woman and attempted to shoo the dogs away.

She said her sudden arrival apparently startled the animals enough that they fled from the area.

The resident says she then called 911 and stayed with the woman until an ambulance and police arrived.

Halton Police Media Relations Officer Const. Steve Elms said the woman received a minor injury to her foot.

He also said it's believed the same dogs were responsible for a second attack on a man and his family moments later in the nearby area of Thornhill Drive and Secord Avenue.

The dogs bit the adult male," said Elms.

An ambulance was requested for this victim due to the dog bites and he was transported to hospital."

The wounds were non-life-threatening.

Elms said police were able to locate both dogs, which were on the loose in the area, and eventually contain them.

Oakville and Milton Humane Society spokesperson John Bugailiskis said the dogs' owner arrived on the scene and took the dogs home prior to the humane society's arrival.

The humane society, according to Bugailiskis, can only take a dog into custody if the animal is unattended when they arrive or if it is voluntarily surrendered to the organization.

He said the humane society is investigating the two incidents and is gathering information from all parties involved and witnesses.

No charges have been laid. The investigation is ongoing.

It is unclear how the dogs came to be roaming in Hopedale Park.

The possibility of the dogs getting loose again has Greco concerned.

I'm terrified. I have two dogs and two young kids and it's absolutely terrifying that this could happen," she said.

It honestly makes me not want to leave my house or let my kids play out in the yard. The fact that these vicious dogs are just able to obviously get away from their owner and wander the neighbourhood...somebody could have been killed."

When asked about her decision to put her own safety at risk and come to the aid of her neighbour Greco was modest in her answer.

I just did what anybody else would do," she said.
