Halton Regional Police say an Oakville man stopped on suspicion of distracted driving has been convicted of several offences.

The stop on Speers Road back in March 2020 concluded in court recently with the man, 33 at the time of the traffic stop, being convicted of driving while under suspension, driving a motor vehicle with no insurance and driving while holding a hand-held communication device.

"The cellphone offence was the reason for the stop, which led to the discovery of the driver's licence being suspended and that the vehicle had no insurance," Halton police Const. Marc Taraso said in a Twitter message.

The result in court, Taraso added, was a $500 fine for the cellphone offence, a $1,000 fine for driving while under suspension and $5,000 for operating a motor vehicle with no insurance. Court costs and victims of crime surcharge will also be added, he said.

The incident garnered some social media attention, with Taraso's update Tweet on the convictions in court garnering more than 30 responses.
