Fire at Hamilton Mountain home causes more than $250,000 in damages
One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries after a structure fire at a Fennell Avenue West home overnight.
The Red Cross has been called in to help the occupants, who were unable to return to their home because of fire damage and utilities being disconnected.
Hamilton fire was called to the home at 35 Fennell Ave. W., west of Upper James Street, shortly before 2 a.m. Friday, said Assistant Deputy Chief Steve Welton. The first crews on scene found flames visible from the upper level of the home.
Firefighters immediately entered the house to extinguish the blaze and complete a search, confirming everyone had left the home, he said.
Hamilton paramedics transported one person to hospital with minor injuries. Hamilton police were also called to block traffic in the area for firefighting equipment.
Welton said working smoke detectors alerted the occupants to the fire and played a significant role" in everyone's ability to flee the home at the onset of the fire.
The fire is estimated to have caused more than $250,000 in damages, he said. The cause is not yet known.
