Eagles' Minshew to start vs. Cowboys with Hurts injured

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Gardner Minshew will start Saturday's contest against the Dallas Cowboys with Jalen Hurts likely out due to a sprained shoulder, head coach Nick Sirianni announced Thursday.

"Gardner will be our guy," Sirianni said. "Gardner will be ready, and Gardner worked his butt off for this opportunity."

Sirianni initially said Tuesday that Hurts had a chance to start.

"(Hurts) is disappointed because he wants to play," Sirianni said Thursday, according to Josh Tolentino of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "But we have to do what's best as an organization to put us in a safe spot because he will play through anything. Those are hard conversations we have to game sometimes."

Hurts suffered a shoulder injury in the third quarter of last week's win against the Chicago Bears when defensive end Trevis Gipson landed on him while making a tackle. Hurts was slow to get up but remained in the contest.

The 24-year-old is producing a potential MVP campaign and has led Philadelphia to a 13-1 record, totaling 4,219 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Minshew started just two games in 2021.

He led the Eagles to victory over the New York Jets in Week 13 last season, completing 20 passes on 25 attempts for 242 yards and two touchdowns.
