SIU investigating after man falls from Hamilton overpass
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a 57-year-old man was seriously injured in a fall from a Hamilton overpass in the lower city Sunday afternoon.
In a Monday release, the provincial investigator said early information suggests Hamilton police were called to the area of King Street East and Kenilworth Avenue South for reports of a man threatening to jump off a bridge" at around 4 p.m. on New Year's Day.
The SIU says officers attempted to speak to the man" and called a police crisis response team for help.
Members from the team arrived and the man fell from the bridge," the SIU said in the release.
The man survived the fall, and was taken to hospital by paramedics, the SIU says. He remains in hospital.
In a message to The Spectator Monday afternoon, police spokesperson Jackie Penman confirmed officers responded to a person in crisis Sunday, but declined to comment further.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.
