Commuters who habitually run for GO trains attempting to board them in the nick of time may want to give themselves a little more breathing room.

GO train doors, starting on Jan. 9, will close a minute before scheduled departure times, according to Metrolinx.

The provincial agency told the Star that the move is to ensure trains leave and arrive at stations on time.

Metrolinx said it has been telling commuters about the change since Jan. 2.

Customers are being informed through PA, digital sign messaging, OTG (On the GO) alerts and CSA (customer service ambassador) on-board train announcements," a statement sent to the Star read.

When answering questions from people online about the change, GO Transit said the move will apply to Union, Durham College Oshawa, Old Elm and Allandale stations.

The transit system said the change will allow crews time to complete their pre-departure procedures."

GO Transit also said on Twitter that the door closing time will not be reflected on their departure boards and encouraged riders to arrive on platforms five to 10 minutes earlier before their train is scheduled to leave a stop.

GO buses and the UP Express will not be impacted by the move, according to Metrolinx.

The agency said it would monitor customer feedback on the move.
