Toronto residents have been expressing their fears of riding the TTC lately after a string of random and, at times, violent incidents on the system.

The rise in violence has led to an increase in the number of officers on the transit system. Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw announced Thursday that more than 80 officers will be on the system daily at various locations.

Toronto Mayor John Tory has been pushing for an increase of nearly $50 million to the police's budget, bringing the total force's budget, if approved, to $1.16 billion.

The hiring of an additional 200 officers and 90 special constables are just some of the changes the funding increase will go toward if approved, Tory said during a news conference on Jan. 3.

Critics of the police funding increase say the additional money should be spent on underfunded community services.

The TTC's proposed budget also includes hiring more special constables, with 25 new positions being created and 25 other vacant positions being filled.

The Star has compiled a list of stories over the course of nearly a year of apparent random attacks on the TTC.
