Brothers guilty in Mississauga road rage beating officer called one of ‘the most violent things he had ever seen’
Two brothers have been found guilty of assault and aggravated assault for the vicious 2018 beating of a Mississauga father during a road rage case a Peel police officer called one of the most violent things he had ever seen."
Brampton Superior Court Justice Fletcher Dawson separately found Adam and Yanis Corhamzic not guilty of attempted murder, despite finding that the brothers applied vicious force to a helpless and unconscious" victim.
Delivering the verdict Tuesday, Dawson described a Peel police officer's account of witnessing part of the gruesome" 2018 attack against Mississauga father Mohammad Abu-Marzouk, 43. The officer told court the brothers were treating Abu-Marzouk's head like a soccer ball," the judge said.
Nevertheless, Dawson ruled he was unable to find that the brothers were acting with intent to kill," and were not guilty of attempted murder.
The brothers were also found guilty of assault for an attack on Fuat Yucel, 53, a man who ran to Abu-Marzouk's aid when he was set upon by both men" in the parking lot of Mississauga Valley Community Centre and Library, following a family picnic on July 15, 2018.
Abu Marzouk was taken to St. Michael's Hospital, where he was treated for multiple fractures to his face and a brain hemorrhage.
At the time, Abu Marzouk's brother told Torstar the incident was sparked by a fender-bender as his brother hit a passing car while backing out of a parking spot.
Justice Dawson said both families were leaving the parking lot area following a picnic. He said Yanis started banging on the back of Marzouk's Honda Odyssey van as it was backing out of the parking spot. Witnesses described Yanis yelling racial slurs at the family.
When Mohammad Abu-Marzouk went to see what the banging was, he was confronted by Yanis, who slapped Mohammad in the face, while continuing to make racial slurs," Dawson said. Fuat Yucel tried to defuse the situation by standing between the two men, but he was also attacked. At that point, Adam got involved, Dawson said.
During the altercation, Yucel fell and hit his head on the pavement.
The two accused then turned their attention back to Mohammad, punching and kicking him until he went down," Dawson said.
We went to the park as a Canadian family does, enjoying the summertime, when my husband was attacked," wife Diana said, speaking to the press outside the courthouse Tuesday. She had been in the minivan with her husband and two young daughters at the time of the attack.
Finally, we're here, and the trial is over and we get justice. We trust our Canadian law system," she said.
Mohammad said his long road to recovery was very hard mentally and physically.
Of the attack, he said: I don't remember much."
The court gallery on Tuesday was packed with a huge contingent of family and friends of the victim, as well as family of the offenders.
The Corhamzic brothers, who had been out of custody, were escorted out of the courthouse under police guard.
