It was the moment that America's State of the Union address, once a staid affair punctured only by applause, turned into a verbal brawl more akin to Britain's House of Commons.
Joe Biden accused some Republicans of wanting to take the economy hostage" and slash social welfare entitlements. Booo!", No!" and Liar!" came the response. US presidents typically ignore hecklers but Biden chose to take them on.
