Hearts for Helen Gillings
by Barry Gray - Photojournalist from on (#68X07)
People placed hearts and other messages to a pole in an alley off Emerald Street North near King Street to remember Helen Gillings, an Indigenous woman who was killed this time of year in 1995.
Gillings' body was found stuffed under an overturned sofa in the alleyway. The 19-year-old mother of two who worked in the sex trade was last seen entering the alley with a man at about 1 a.m. on Feb. 16, 1995.
Her murder remains unsolved. The $10,000 reward remains unclaimed.
