No injuries in east-end house fire that caused ‘extensive damage’

Hamilton fire says an east-end blaze caused significant damage to a home.

Officers on patrol came across a residence with smoke coming out of it" in the area of Dunsmure Road and Parkdale Avenue North, said Const. Indy Bharaj of the Hamilton police.

The front was engulfed in flames, black smoke coming out," he said.

Police say officers evacuated one occupant from the rented basement apartment.

Whoever was living down there wasn't aware that the residence was on fire," Bharaj said.

No one was home in the single-family dwelling" on the upper floors, he said.

Fire crews responded at around 2 p.m. on Feb. 14 to find occupants outside of the home," assistant deputy fire chief Ryan Coburn said in an email.

Firefighters initiated fire attack and completed searches to confirm everyone had exited," he said.

Photos from the scene show crews spraying water through the charred second-storey window of the home.

Coburn said the blaze caused extensive damage" to the second floor of the home. No dollar-value loss had been determined as of 5:30 p.m. He did not say whether a cause had been determined.

Two people were assessed on scene, but refused treatment and transport to hospital, Supt. Dave Thompson of the Hamilton Paramedic Service said in a message.
