Cowboys' Prescott excited about McCarthy taking over play-calling duties
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is thrilled about head coach Mike McCarthy taking over play-calling duties.
"It's great to dial in, fix some things, get sharper and crisper. I'm excited," Prescott said, according to Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports.
Dallas parted ways with offensive coordinator and play-caller Kellen Moore on Jan. 29 after four seasons. The club made the playoffs in Moore's final two campaigns.
The Cowboys' offense ranked fourth in points per game in 2022 but had a disappointing finish to the season. The offense struggled in its divisional round exit against the San Francisco 49ers, totaling 282 yards and two turnovers.
McCarthy hasn't called the plays on offense since 2018. He's expected to adjust the offensive system.
"Right now, Mike told me (about) 20-30% change," Prescott said.
Dallas' offensive personnel will look different in 2023, with running back Tony Pollard and tight end Dalton Schultz set to hit the open market. Upgrades at the wide receiver position are also expected, as CeeDee Lamb accounted for 40% of the team's receiving yards last season.
Moore became the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator less than 24 hours after parting with the Cowboys.
"When you lose a friend, you're going to be upset, but that's the nature of this business," Prescott said. "When I say I'm upset he's gone, it's not that I'm upset about the future. It's that when you're a player, you have the relationship we've had, when he was a player. (I) watched his success and watched him grow into the coordinator that he is."
