Hamilton paramedics say a child was hospitalized after they were struck by a vehicle in the city's east end Friday evening.

Supt. Dave Thompson of the Hamilton Paramedic Service told The Spectator crews responded to a crash in the area of Barton Street East and Frederick Avenue, near the Centre on Barton, at 6:44 p.m. on Feb. 24.

Thompson said a pedestrian, who is believed to be 14 years old, was taken to a pediatric trauma centre with serious injuries.

Staff Sgt. Peter Ranieri of the Hamilton police said the young female was being treated in hospital with a fractured leg.

The driver remained at the scene of the collision.

Police had closed Barton Street East, both ways, just before 7 p.m. for the investigation. The road was open by 8:30 p.m.

No other patients were assessed on scene or taken to hospital, Thompson said.

Ranieri said charges in the crash were unlikely.
