The Baltimore Ravens released veteran defensive end Calais Campbell, the team announced Monday.

The transaction clears $7 million in cap space, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. However, the Ravens did not rule out bringing Campbell back.

"While this is the worst part of the business, we have not closed the door on the possibility of him returning to our team in the future," general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement.

Campbell, 36, announced in February that he would be returning for his 16th NFL season. He's spent the last three years with the Ravens and has recorded 11 sacks over 41 appearances.

A second-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2008, Campbell has made six Pro Bowls and notched 99 sacks over his career.
