Smith-Schuster confirmed the move on Twitter later Wednesday.
The 26-year-old receiver will be a welcome addition to a Patriots offense that recently lost wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who joined the Las Vegas Raiders on a reported three-year, $33-million contract earlier this week.
Smith-Schuster played an instrumental role in the Chiefs' run to their Super Bowl LVII victory. He led all Kansas City wide receivers in yards (933) and receptions (78) last season. Only tight end Travis Kelce exceeded Smith-Schuster's output.
The USC product predominantly played in the slot since entering the league but is also capable of playing out wide.
Smith-Schuster, who spent the first five seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, put up his best numbers in 2018 when he caught 111 passes for 1,426 yards.
