The principal of a science and technology charter school in Florida has resigned after allegedly signing a check of $100,000 to an Elon Musk imitator. The principal used school funds to write the check. Fortunately, the school's business manager could stop the check before it hit the scammer's account.

The scammed former principal, Dr. Jan Mcgee, was deeply convinced by the scammer, and she started believing that she was in a conversation with the real Elon Musk.

The alleged conversation went on for four months before she sent that anonymous scam artist a check. According to Mcgee, the scam artist groomed her to such an extent that Mcgee preferred believing the scammer but not her staff members, who reportedly told her she was falling for a scam.

While it's not clear how the scammer contacted Mcgee, impersonating famous and rich people has become a trend these days.

Scammers have even started playing with crypto by promising individuals to connect them with Elon Musk over Whatsapp. However, to grab this opportunity, individuals will have to buy digital currencies from them. These scammers use Elon's name and face without permission.

What's more, these fraudsters run paid ads on Twitter, and the platform hasn't taken any action yet to prevent them. Probably, Mcgee has also been a victim of such a scam.

Mcgee was a founding board member of Florida's Burns Science and Technology Charter Institute (Oak Hill) and was authorized to grant checks upto $50k. Given this limitation, when Mcgee wrote a check for $100k, it immediately drew the attention of the school's business manager, who then stopped the check from being processed.

Mcgee's Explanation

When Mcgee was questioned about this activity, she explained that she wrote the check to a person who posed himself as Elon and promised to bring an additional investment of up to $6 million for the school.

I am a very smart lady. Well educated. I fell for a scam.Jan Mcgee

From the reports of an NBC TV affiliate, WESH, Orlando, Mcgee has always been ambitious about getting funding from Musk for the welfare of the school, and someone seems to have manipulated Mcgee and tried taking advantage of her unfulfilled dream.

Burns Science and Technology Charter School board closely monitored Mcgee's actions after the incident.

In response to Mcgee's explanation, the school board chairman Albert Amalfitano commented that somehow Mcgee believed it - the scammer must have been highly convincing.

Amalfitano also told WESH that she probably has tried to match funds with the scammer as he promised to invest $6 million for the welfare of the school.

They conducted a performance review of Mcgee in a meeting, where she submitted her resignation. While Mcgee apologized at the board meeting, the school administrators were not ready to rely on Mcgee anymore. According to them, if Mcgee had not signed the resignation, they would have prompted her to do so.
