A group led by Josh Harris has agreed in principle to purchase the Washington Commanders franchise for $6.05 billion, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The deal isn't yet signed or official.

Harris, 58, is the primary owner of the New Jersey Devils of the NHL and the Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA.

The purchasing group also includes former NBA star Magic Johnson and billionaire Mitchell Rales.

A $6-billion price tag would break the record for the most expensive purchase of a U.S. sports franchise. The Walton family's acquisition of the Denver Broncos for $4.65 billion holds the current record.

Incumbent owner Dan Snyder bought the team in 1999 for $750 million. The franchise had a record of 164-220-2 during Snyder's tenure, making the postseason six times. Washington never made it past the divisional round during that span.
