Car veered, mounted sidewalk in Friday crash that injured bystander downtown: Hamilton police

Police say an 86-year-old man was behind the wheel of a red Ford Mustang that struck and injured a bystander Friday evening in downtown Hamilton

The car was travelling eastbound on Main Street East shortly after 5 p.m. on April 14 when the Mustang veered to its right and mounted the sidewalk" after going through the James Street South intersection, police said in a release Saturday.

The Mustang struck fixed objects and the building before striking a bus stop bench with a couple of bystanders. The vehicle came to rest when it crashed into a concrete light standard, knocking it down," police say.

A man sitting on the bench was injured.

Police say the pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his lower leg" and was later determined to be in serious but stable condition.

A second bystander escaped uninjured, police said in the release. The driver of the Mustang was also not injured in the crash.

Main between James and Hughson streets was closed for several hours" Friday evening for investigation, police say.

The collision reconstruction unit is investigating, police said Saturday. Anyone with information is asked to contact them at 905-546-4753.
