Report: 49ers receiving trade calls for Lance
The San Francisco 49ers received inquiries from multiple teams about a potential trade for former No. 3 pick Trey Lance, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
San Francisco has been taking calls rather than making them, Rapoport adds. No trade is reportedly imminent.
Lance started the 2022 season as the 49ers' starting quarterback before an ankle injury ended his year. Brock Purdy took over the down the stretch following an injury to backup signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo and played admirably, leading the club to the NFC Championship Game.
49ers general manager John Lynch said in March that Purdy is likely in line to be the 2023 starting quarterback. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan later said that Lance could regain the starting job.
Purdy underwent elbow surgery this offseason after tearing his UCL in the NFC title game and is expected to miss six-to-eight months.
He's "not really sure" if he'll play in 2023 due to his elbow injury, he told Jori Epstein of Yahoo on Friday.
Lance, meanwhile, has endured a rocky ride with the 49ers, spending his rookie season sitting behind Garoppolo before an ankle injury ended his second season. He made just four career starts, throwing for five touchdowns and scoring one more with his legs.
The 49ers sent a package that included three first-round picks to move up to the No. 3 spot in 2021 to select Lance.
They also solidified their quarterback room with the signing of Sam Darnold this offseason following the departure of Garoppolo in free agency.
