Shooting a second-hand gun: is there anything I need to know?

Hi all, I recently got my firearms licence (Canada) and have a Winchester 94 I inherited from a relative. I'm looking to shoot it for the first time this weekend but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything safety-wise.

First, I've looked at the gun and there does not appear to be anything mechanically wrong with it. The barrel is clean and clear from obstruction. There is no obvious defect or damage to the chamber. It's chambered for 30-30 per the barrel, and I bought some Winchester 30-30 170 grain ammunition.

Is there anything else I need to know before shooting? I'll take adequate hearing and eye protection, too.

Again, I'm a total noob to firearms beyond the course I took and will be at range which is usually empty (literally, it's rural and I'm now a member with a gate lock code so I'll probably be there alone). I don't want the gun blowing up because I did something wrong, though I'm not sure how much of a risk that is. Perhaps very low, but I want to make sure.

Thanks all!
