receiving a pistol as a gift from my girlfriends grandfather what do i need to do?

so i was hanging out with my girlfriend and her grandparents over the weekend and i was talking about how i was really wanting a ruger, my girlfriends grandfather stands up, walks into his room and says here you go holding a ruger in his hand" he told me he's never shot it and he bought it from one of his buddies who had lost the paperwork. keep in mind my girlfriends grandfather resides in tennessee and i live in north carolina. i'm just asking here so i don't get into any trouble, i'm 21 years old and curious onto which steps i need to take to open carry.
