Speed and alcohol are being considered as possible contributing factors in an all-terrain vehicle collision in Dunnville that resulted in the death of a 79-year-old.

On May 10 just after 7:30 p.m., the Haldimand detachment of the OPP, Haldimand County Fire Department and Haldimand County Paramedic Services were called to an ATV collision on Melick Road.

The investigation determined that a 79-year-old from Haldimand was driving the ATV with a 49-year-old from Hamilton as a passenger.

(They) were travelling along Melick Road when the driver of the ATV lost control and struck tree, ejecting both the driver and passenger," Const. Ed Sanchuk wrote in a news release. As a result, the operator suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to hospital, and then airlifted to a Hamilton hospital for further treatment. The passenger was also transported to hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries."

On May 11, the driver was pronounced deceased in hospital.

The OPP West Region traffic incident management and enforcement team is continuing to investigate.

Further updates will be provided when new information becomes available.

Motorists are reminded to call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so if they see a suspected impaired driver on the roads.
