How to diagnose problems with laptop (slackware 15.0 x64)
by Veerei from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6CDFG)
Hello, folks. I'm relatively new to linux and an absolute newbie to
slackware. It's my first time to use distribution without systemd and
other wrapers around default tools, so I need some help in digging.
I have a laptop Asus Zenbook 14:
Code: CPU: 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 5825U with Radeon Graphics (-MT MCP-)
speed/min/max: 1637/1600/4547 MHz Kernel: 6.3.8 x86_64 Up: 2h 40m Mem:
4096.6/15400.9 MiB (26.6%) Storage: 476.94 GiB (21.7% used) Procs: 381
Shell: Bash 5.1.16 inxi: 3.3.12It's not a new model. AFAIK 2022 or even earlier. I've successfully
installed full slackware 15.0. I use plasma as default DE. I
experienced three problems:
1. Nearly 3 times out of 10 after I wake up laptop from sleep I get a
black blank screen and nothing works except power button and magic key
combo (alt+prt_sc+REISUB). I'm unable to switch to different TTY,
unable to kill Xorg with ctl+alt+backspace. Looks like session freeze.
Maybe it just display doesn't wake up with laptop and it just looks like
nothing works until I press power button...
I'm trying to find what is the reason in logs from /var/log, but I don't
get what time exactly computer freezed. It could be hours ago when I
left it in sleep state. How to find the exact time of freeze? Should
there be any message helping to determine that specific times? What to
do to better diagnose this trouble and fix it?
2. Touchpad works awfully in plasma and xfce. Previously I used gnome
and it was amazing how touchpad in a smart way doesn't tap and drag
when I just accidentally touch it when typing. In plasma and xfce it's
like a pain in... you know where. I set tap lock when typing in plasma
settings and even increase lock time to almost a second but it didn't
feel like in gnome. Still feels unnatural. How can I set up touchpad
to work like in gnome, e.g. in ubuntu or fedora? AFAIU touchpad
management is different between slackware and systemd distributions.
3. As far as my laptop is not fully compatible with slackware 15
default firmware and kernel versions I need to build a fresh ones.
I've borrowed kernel and firmware from current branch (6.1.35 at the
moment of writing this post). Should I worry about my system stability
due to using of kernel from current? Does newer version of kernel
affect somehow stability of other programs (default or manually
installed)?
