Grub menu will not show.

Hi, I can't seem to get grub menu to show anymore. It used to show and stopped. I don't know when it stopped as I never look until I need it. I have edited /etc/default/grub to STYLE=menu TIMEOUT=10 and run update-grub as sudo user and as root. All I get is a black screen while waiting for timer then login screen. I changed the time from 10 to 30 and back again to see if it was changing and it does, but just the duration of black screen.
