Wifi Range Extender

I recently installed a wifi range extender. It works, however I find that I now have two available named "connections"; mainrouter and mainrouter-EXT. In order to get the best reception on any device, I need to change my connection to which ever is closest. So, if I'm in the main area of the house where the mainrouter is located, I should be connected to it. If I get up and move my laptop to a more remote area where the mainrouter-EXT (range extender) is located, I need to change my wifi connection to it. The password for each is the same.
I expected that portable devices (computer, phone, etc) would be able to find the strongest signal and make the switch automatically. But, apparently that is not the case. Am I missing something in router or device settings or is that the way it works.
I have contemplated buying/installing a wifi mesh system that is supposed to be better, but I really don't want to spend the money if I can keep from it.
