KDE a black screen with mouse pointer

I am running -current, but have been away on holiday for a week. On return I ran
Code:slackpkg update
slackpkg install-new
slackpkg upgrade-allI boot fine into run level 3, but startx fails to correctly start KDE. I get a cog rotating for a bit and then a black screen and a mouse pointer.
I ran slackpkg on Thursday 27th July which completed fine, then again today, which also appeared to complete ok - no error messages.
I used xwmconfig to switch to xfce to get to LQ, but I do prefer KDE.
Any suggestions for fixing this?
