Trying to use cp -r media home in Ubuntu terminal. Cannot enter a command after this and need close that terminal and open a new one.

Hi all.
Here is the exact problem i am having.
I am following an Ubuntu server administrator course at home.
I am following the cp example which looks like cp -r media ~ (in the video this tilde is superscript). I don't have a superscript tilde, only the one i have used here. I am told the superscript tilde is shorthand for home.
if i type cp -r media ~/home or cp -r media home, the cursor moves beneath my terminal name with no option to enter an extra command. All i get is these characters :^[[A^[[A^[[B^[[B^[[C^[[C^[[D^[[D (these are the arrow keys ascii's i think). Is there an escape sequence or do i close the terminal and open a new terminal window like i have been doing?
Thank you.
