AIX mksysb failing

Afternoon
We recently dropped iSCSI and our mksysb backups started failing. I was searching and had seen a comment the master / client mksysb process can use NFS.
However when a NIM client is on AIX 5.3 5300-12-05-1140 and our NIM master is AIX 7.1 7100-00-10-1334 and the client mksysb rootvg contain JFS and JFS2 vfs I had been told iSCSI must be used?
