Slackware 13.37 sendmail processes filling memory
by cliffbdb from LinuxQuestions.org on (#6ESV3)
I've been having problems with sendmail processes filling up memory on my Slackware 13.37 server. There will be several thousand sendmail processes almost all of which show something like
"root 32030 20516 0 Sep14 ? 00:00:00 sendmail: 38F2cbL5032030 [some IP addr]: AUTH"
with AUTH being the common thread among them. I thought maybe adding some memory would help but I went from 4GB to 8GB and eventually i just ended up with ~6000 processes instead of ~3000. It appears that 15-20 percent seem to be from the day before but none from 2 days ago so it does seem that they eventually go away. Don't know if there is a time option you can set to get rid of the processes after a certain time or not.
I recently implemented opendkim but this problem predates that by a year or more. Slackware 13.37 is old but it has been running solidly for many years and I hate to break my system with an upgrade if I don't have to.
I've searched a lot for any solutions to this and haven't found anything that seems to fit my problem.
I'm not a real sendmail guru so I'm open to any and all suggestions about what to do.
Thanks is advance for any thoughts
Cliff
