The Denver Broncos are trading pass-rusher Randy Gregory to the San Francisco 49ers, both clubs announced.

Denver originally planned to release Gregory - who signed a five-year, $70-million deal with the team in the 2022 offseason - but was able to find a trade partner before formally cutting the 30-year-old.

The Broncos will send Gregory and a 2024 seventh-round pick to the Niners for a 2024 sixth-round pick.

Kyle Shanahan said he just met Randy Gregory, who passed a physical. He's returning home to Denver and will be back with the 49ers on Monday. Obviously, Gregory will not be available to play in Sunday's game against the Cowboys.

Denver will pay the remaining prorated $14-million base salary of Gregory's contract, according to Pro Football Talk.

Gregory has appeared in four games so far this season, registering nine tackles (two for loss) and one sack. He played just six games with the team in 2022 due to a knee injury.

The former second-round pick previously appeared in 50 games for the Dallas Cowboys from 2015-21. He had one of the best seasons of his career in his last year on the Cowboys, tallying 17 QB hits, six sacks, three forced fumbles, and one interception.

Gregory adds depth and experience to the 49ers, who boast one of the NFL's premier defenses. However, San Francisco has struggled to generate sacks, putting up only nine through the first four games of the season.

Led by reigning Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa, San Francisco's rotation of pass-rushers includes Drake Jackson, Clelin Ferrell, and Kerry Hyder.
