Colts' Richardson unlikely to return this season

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season, team owner Jim Irsay told ESPN's Stephen Holder on Monday.

"It's not definite, but (he) probably misses this year, and we're going to have to contend with that," Irsay said.

Richardson - this year's fourth overall pick - sustained an AC joint injury in Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans. He was originally expected to miss four-to-eight weeks but reportedly started considering season-ending surgery recently.

"There's debate going, but it's probably going to lead toward surgery in the next week or so," Irsay added. "We're just trying to figure out exactly how and when and what we want to do and what Anthony wants to do."

Richardson's absence is a big blow to a Colts team that's struggled to find consistency at quarterback in recent years. Indy hasn't won a playoff game since the 2018 season.

The Florida product has already missed two games this year. He was sidelined in Week 3 due to a concussion and didn't play Week 6 because of his shoulder ailment. In four starts, Richardson completed 59.5% of his passes for 577 yards and three touchdowns against one interception. The 21-year-old also scored four TDs on the ground.

Gardner Minshew, who's made two starts while replacing Richardson, will presumably remain the Colts' QB1. Minshew threw for 300 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted three times during Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Indianapolis is 3-3 this season.

Indy's quarterback depth chart also features Sam Ehlinger and Kellen Mond, who's on the practice squad.
