Seahawks' top edge Nwosu needs pec surgery, likely out for season

Seattle Seahawks edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu will undergo pectoral surgery and likely miss the remainder of the season, head coach Pete Carroll announced Monday, according to Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune.

Nwosu's injury is a big blow to a Seattle defense that's been solid through the season's first seven weeks. The Seahawks place 12th in points allowed and ninth in EPA per play allowed.

The USC product has racked up 16 tackles (four for loss), six QB hits, two sacks, and two forced fumbles in six games in 2023. He also ranks third on the team with 15 pressures, according to PFF.

Nwosu signed a three-year, $45-million contract extension with the Seahawks this past offseason after recording a career-high 9.5 sacks in his first year with the NFC West club. He joined Seattle on a two-year deal during the 2022 offseason after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, who drafted him in the second round in 2018.

With Nwosu sidelined, Boye Mafe and Darrell Taylor will lead the Seahawks' group of edge rushers. Mafe is the team's joint-leader with four sacks. Defensive lineman Jarran Reed has also amassed four sacks to go along with eight QB hits in 2023.
