Cousins tore Achilles in win over Packers

An MRI confirmed that Kirk Cousins will miss the rest of the season after tearing his Achilles tendon Sunday, the Minnesota Vikings announced Monday.

The Vikings feared their quarterback had sustained a serious Achilles injury after he was carted to the locker room in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 24-10 win over the Green Bay Packers. However, the team was waiting on additional testing to confirm the issue.

The 35-year-old completed 23 of 31 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns against Green Bay before exiting. Rookie Jaren Hall came in at quarterback to finish the game.

Cousins has been remarkably healthy throughout his career. The veteran has only missed two games since becoming a full-time starter with Washington in 2015 (one in 2021 due to COVID-19 and one in 2019 with the Vikings resting their starters for the playoffs).

Head coach Kevin O'Connell said postgame that Cousins' injury "will not change the level I believe he played to this year and what he's meant to me and this organization," according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

Cousins entered the Week 8 matchup ranked third in the NFL in passing yards (2,057) and second in passing touchdowns (16).

He was widely rumored to be a trade candidate after Minnesota started 0-3, but the Vikings have won three of their last four games to get to 4-4.

Cousins is on the final year of his contract and is slated to hit free agency next offseason.
