Stafford day-to-day with UCL sprain in right thumb

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay announced quarterback Matthew Stafford is day-to-day with a sprained UCL in his right thumb, according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop.

Stafford suffered the injury in the second quarter of Sunday's 43-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys while hitting his throwing hand on a defender's helmet. After a brief exit, he returned for the second half and even caught a pass on a two-point conversion before leaving for good.

He was spotted on the sideline with a taped hand.

The 35-year-old has won three of his eight starts this season and has thrown for eight touchdowns to seven interceptions. His 59.7 completion percentage would currently rank as his lowest since 2013.

Stafford returned to lead a young and transformed Rams squad in 2023 after missing eight games last year due to a neck injury and multiple trips to the concussion protocol. He also dealt with an elbow injury coming into the 2022 campaign.

Brett Rypien would be expected to start in the team's Week 9 matchup against the Green Bay Packers if Stafford is unable to go.
